Updating to 2.0. For Windows and Previous ZiPhone Users

As some of you may know I have recently updated my 1st gen iPhone from FW 1.1.4 to 2.0, what you don't know is, I'll be going back to 1.1.4 later today!

There is so much hype about this new firmware but I have no use for any of the new features, which you can read about on the Apple site. Most of these features I had with my unlocked, jail broken 1.1.4 and the installer.app's 3rd party applications. The new app store is pretty cool except for the apps you have to pay for. When I updated I was let down by the fact that 2 of my 3 favourite apps weren't even on there! THTouch (Texas hold'em poker) seems to be replaced by other poker apps which all run the $4.99 mark. My other favourite is AgileMessenger, a chat client that supports MSN, Yahoo, Google, and more! It also allows taking and sending pics through your conversations and has many other awesome features! In the App Store for 2.0 all I can see is the AOL Instant Messenger (free). Again I have no use for AOL since I don't have an account with them or know anybody that does.

Another let down was the Twinkle app. On the new 2.0 version you have to link your Twinkle with a Tapulous account. Just one more annoying step to add to my already frustrating day... I couldn't get passed "Could not save please register for a Tapulous account". I DID! I gave up after 30 minutes and resorted to Twitterific, the free version not the $9.99 premium app. Over all Twitterific looks nice but I miss my TWINKLE!

I want to point out a major element that is missing on my 2.0 iPhone... INSTALLER.app. Included with the "custom" firmware from the Dev Team is Cydia Installer... well, it looks pretty empty compared to Installer.app. Reasons for this are most apps aren't compatible with 2.0 as well as most of the sources for Installer.app will NOT work with Cydia. "They" are thinking of integrating the two in the near future, but I can't wait! I need my apps back now! So after all this is said and done, I am definitely going back to 1.1.4 today and will stay there until my apps are compatible with the 2.0 firmware and Installer.app is available for the jailbreak!

For all you Eager Beavers who need to test it out for themselves, here are the steps I took:

I'm on a windows computer and I previously had a ZiPhoned unlocked and jailbroken 1st gen 8GB iPhone, if you are using anything else just go here and follow the instructions, because I can't help you.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Make sure you have allotted yourself enough time for the updating because if anything goes wrong, (like it did for me lol) you will need at least half a day without distractions!! More advice: if you are a smoker have enough cigarettes on hand! I also had a bottle of wine to keep me company and to relax my frustrations LOL!

OK HERE WE GO:

1) Sync your iPhone with iTunes to back up all your data! Then close iTunes. I did this twice, once with my old iTunes then again with my updated iTunes.

2) Use WinPWN 1.0 To PWN Your 1.1.4 iPhone. If you need WinPWN Get it at:

WinPWN will ask for an IPSW you should use the 1.1.4 IPSW. Here is the LINK

Anybody who has never used winpwn this is what you do:

When you have it open click BROWSE.ipsw, select the 1.1.4 that you just got from above(open). Let winpwn do it's thing for a min, when it says make sure iPhone is connected, do so then click iPWNer. DO NOT touch anything until wnpwn says something like "Your iPhone has been PWNED" (proceed to step 3)

***If winpwn stops before that and says "Please connect iPhone and put it in Recovery mode" just unplug your phone and plug it back in, winpwn will attempt to put it in recovery again by itself, which should work. then it will continue the process until you get the "Your iPhone has been PWNED" message. (proceed to step 3)***

3) Install BootNeuter on your iPhone (Available Via Installer use the old 1.0 version it basically preps the phone). Run BootNeuter and have it Neuter your iphone, the settings I used were: 4.6 with Neuter On, FakeBlank Off, and Unlock On. Many have reported skipping this step and everything still works great, I tried that too and it didn't work!! I think it had something to do with having my 1.1.4 ZiPhoned

4) Update your iTunes to 7.7 (this is when I did my second sync too). Make sure during the install process you uncheck "Automatically Update iTunes etc. blah blah".

5) Grab a pre-created IPSW Made with PWNAGE 2.0 Mac. If you don't have one made you can grab one here (this is a .TORRENT file)

6) Now you need to put your iPhone into the proper RECOVERY mode (NOT DFU). The best and most straightforward way to do this is through ZiPhone, under advance settings select RECOVERY mode, not DFU or Normal.

7) When ZiPhone tells you your phone is in RECOVERY mode your iTunes should detect it in that way, if you don't have your 7.7 iTunes open, do so now.
In iTunes hold down the SHIFT key and click RESTORE. Select the custom 2.0 firmware you downloaded in step 5 (open).

8) Let iTunes and your iPhone work their magic... After the restore you should see bootneuter automatically come up (this is pwnage unlocking, activating and jail breaking your iphone). Then your phone will reboot and be detected by iTunes, it's up to you whether you want to set it as a new iPhone or use your previously synced settings. I didn't continue with this step I just turned off iTunes to browse the new 2.0 on my phone.

You can try out the shortcuts others have stated in the comments to work but NONE of them worked for me. I finally resorted to taking this "long" route and then everything worked perfectly.

All in all, I feel like I wasted a whole day!

Many Disappointed ...

You have probably heard that Canadians were extremely disappointed about the outrageous data prices being offered by Rogers for the new iPhone 3G, well within minutes of launch time, there are many new issues they are disappointed about.

With Rogers changing their data rates to $30 for 6gb for customers who sign up and buy the iPhone in July and August just days before the launch, thousands of Canadians were more eager to wait in lineups across the country to get their hands on that phone! What they weren't told is, they might not get one! Limited quantities were distributed throughout Rogers stores, approximately 40 to 80 units per store.

Well take a look at the lineups from today's 3G iPhone launch....

The cellphone company's flagship outlet itself only had 100 units! I'm more than sure there were more than 100 people in all of the lineups! Some of these people waited literally DAYS in the lines, rain and shine.

The limited quantities wasn't the only reason why some of these techies couldn't get the iPhone.
Imagine standing in line for hours or even days and finally making your way through the "Gates of Heaven" to be told, "Sorry, we aren't selling the iPhone to existing Rogers customers, today is only for NEW subscribers."

OH I WOULD HAVE BEEN LIVID!

Update....
*** MORE AND MORE PEOPLE NOT GETTING THE iPHONE:
I am hearing a lot about SYSTEM FAILURES on the Rogers activation process, resulting in the sales of iPhones being stopped. Not a great start to launch day. Also, with 22 countries trying to activate through iTunes at the same time there is a lag in the system. Even iPhone users at home with the "old" iPhone are having problems upgrading their phones to the new firmware 2.0

For those of you at home I suggest NOT upgrading your iTunes or your iPhone's firmware at this time! Unless you want to lose all of your previously installed apps and the chance of "bricking" your iPhone until ZiPhone is updated and the situation with activation clears up.

Is the new 3G iPhone (to be available July 11, 2008) really worth the price? Bottom line what are we really paying for it??

I came across some info on a blog I frequent by Gary (iPhone Fan), about data plans with Rogers and an estimated cost of the new 3G iPhone after the fact.

So what is NEW with the 3G iPhone???

First off, it is officially going to be sold in CANADA!!! Rogers and Fido both confirmed they will be selling the unit! How sweet is that? No more trips across the boarder or worrying about fraud ads on auction sites selling the iPhone!

Secondly, Apple states it TWICE THE SPEED at HALF THE PRICE!!! (Although apparently you have to sign up for a 2yr or 3yr contract from Rogers/Fido to buy one)

Thirdly, when the 3G launches it will be available in Black (8GB)or WHITE (8GB or 16GB)!

NEW features:

Sounds pretty exciting! Especially for those of us who get lost quite frequently!

This is pretty much the only feature I would be interested in. GPS devices are pretty hot right now, who doesn't want one?? Besides, if you can get one included with the most talked about phone that you will be buying anyway, it's one sweet deal!

Another feature that is getting a lot of talk is the change from a metal back to a PLASTIC one... I'm not convinced this is a turn in the right direction, however it might be part of the reasoning behind the slashed pricing. Previously released iPhones started at $399, the new 3G will start at $199.

OTHER notable features:

-better battery life: 2G talk time: 10 hours (vs old 5), 5 hours of 3G talk-time, 5-6 hours of 3G browsing 7 hours of video, 24 hours of audio

All in all, the new 3G iPhone sounds pretty cool.... but, well... I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with my current 8GB iPhone FW 1.1.4 After all, it's a part of the family now :)

Getting Installer.app On Your iPhone

This is what I would say has been the best part of owning an iPhone: Having the infamous Installer.app, which has led to unlimited possibilities!

From playing games such as Solitaire and Yahtzee, Nintendo, SNES, Sega, Game Boy Advance and many other console games, to getting some serious work done by using many third party applications available on the Installer.app such as, FREE voip, endless Dictionaries- including translators, Voice dialing, video recording, even iWoman - makes tracking monthly menstruations easy - this can also be good for men who want to be warned ahead of time when their woman might be getting her PMS on lol... they can use this app to plan their next "guys weekend"!

In short, With Installer.app you can do IT ALL!

iPhone Terminology

To start things off I want every new "iPhone-r" to know basic iPhone terminology.

With the upcoming release of the 3G iPhone in Canada here is what you should know...

3G iPhone:

3G means Third Generation, it refers to the technology.
Third generation (3G) is the generic term used for the next generation of mobile communications systems. These have been created to support the effective delivery of a range of multimedia services. In addition, they provide more efficient systems for the over-the-air transmission of existing services, such as voice, text and data that are available today.

3G technology gives iPhone fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. iPhone 3G also makes it possible to do more in more places: Surf the web, download email, get directions, and watch video — even while you’re on a call.

Wikipedia note on 3G:

3G is the third generation of mobile phone standards and technology, superseding 2G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the International Mobile Telecommunications programme, IMT-2000.

3G technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8Mbit/s on the uplink.

Unlike IEEE 802.11 networks, 3G networks are wide area cellular telephone networks which evolved to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony. IEEE 802.11 (common names Wi-Fi or WLAN) networks are short range, high-bandwidth networks primarily developed for data.

Activation (Most likely already done in store when you bought it through your wireless carrier)
When you first purchase your iPhone all you can do is call 911 until you activate with ROGERS or FIDO (or similar). If you are using an official Apple carrier then you can activate through iTunes; otherwise you will have to perform a hack to activate your iPhone. (when the new 3G is out activating through itunes may not be possible, I will update this at that time) Once activated it becomes an iPod touch with camera and bluetooth at which point you will want to proceed to jailbreak and possibly unlock it for use on other carriers.

Baseband
The Baseband controls the interaction between the Phone part of the iPhone and the operating system. Whenever the iPhone needs to communicate with cell towers it works through the Baseband. The Baseband is responsible for making sure the sim-card is valid and for getting Signals. The GSM phone, as well as the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are all under the control of the baseband processor. This processor has its own RAM and flash resources, separate from the ARM core resources. The baseband processor is a resource to the operating system.
The latest baseband version is 04.04.05_G and it corresponds to the 1.1.4 firmware. (this will be updated when the 3G comes out)

Bootloader
There are at least two bootloaders in the iPhone. One is the ARM Core Bootloader and deals with the Operating System, the other is the Baseband Bootloader. Bootloaders make sure that when the iPhone boots it is doing things in the right order, and getting everything done. The bootloader also provides a protocol for obtaining and storing an updated version of the main program. Normally, the bootloader is not updated. It is the main program that gets upgraded, not the boot loader. Also, if something happens during the update of the main program, the bootloader will always be there to save you and restore the main program with the preferred one. However, when you update the bootloader, if anything undesireable happens, the bootloader will be corrupted. This means that the processor will not restart at all. The phone is dead for all intents and purposes at this point. Currently (pre 3G) the iPhone has shipped with two different Baseband Bootloaders -3.9 and 4.6.

DFU Mode
DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn't work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for 10 seconds. Just before you would normally see the Apple logo, release the Sleep/Wake button and keep hold the Home button until an iTunes detects an iPhone in recovery mode. NOTE**: This is really tricky to get the timing right it will take a few attempts. If you are in DFU Mode your screen will be black with nothing displayed. (if you turn your computer speakers up you should hear a sound letting you know when the computer detects your iPhone)

EDGE
Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) or Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), is a digital mobile phone technology that allows it to increase data transmission rate and improve data transmission reliability. Although technically a 3G network technology it is generally classified as the unofficial standard 2.75G, due to its slower network speed.

Firmware
The firmware version you have installed on the iPhone is similar to the version of the operating system on your computer. Newer firmware versions usually add new features, fix bugs, and improve stability. iPhones first shipped with 1.0.x firmware. iPhones now are shipping with 1.1.4 and version 1.2 (2.0 Beta) is available to select developers. (this will be updated when the 3G is out)

GSM
Global System for Mobile communications is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. The current iPhone uses GSM technology (new iPhones on 3G will be released July 11 2008). Rogers and Fido are currently the only providers for GSM cell phone service.

Installer.app
Installer.app is a UIKit based package manager for the iPhone. It works by downloading packages over WiFi (wireless networking) or EDGE (and 3G when it is out). It supports installing, updating and uninstalling applications from multiple sources. You will use Installer.app to install a majority of your iPhone applications.

Jailbreak
The process of gaining access to the iPhone's root filesystem, allowing third-party applications to run on the device. In general once you jailbreak you will have Installer.app on your SpringBoard. You can use Installer to install most every application you would need on your iPhone.

LOCKED
A locked iPhone is one that can only use a properly contracted (currently AT&T in the U.S.) SIM card to make phone calls with. This is the SIM the iPhone comes with out of the box. Rogers, as well as Fido in Canada will be the carriers of the iPhone come the July 11th release date.

OOB or OTB
Used to refer to the firmware version your iPhone came with "Out of the Box". ie. If you have a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone that means your iPhone came with the 1.1.2 firmware preinstalled. (again this will be updated when the 3G is out)

Recovery Mode
If you want to do a clean restore you can put your iPhone into recovery mode to do so. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the iPhone reboots. Once you see the Apple logo, release the Sleep/Wake button and keep hold the Home button until an iTunes logo and the usb cable appear on screen. You can then use iTunes to restore your firmware.

Secpack
A Secpack is similar to a password for the Bootloader. When passed to the bootloader, it authorizes write access to the Baseband.

SDK
SDK is short for Software Development Kit and it's basically a library of software that helps you develop applications and utilities. Apple has just released the iPhone SDK which is the set of tools needed to create applications that run on the iPhone.

SIM
A Subscriber Identity Module is a removable smart card for mobile cellular telephony devices such as mobile computers and mobile phones. SIM cards securely store the service-subscriber key (IMSI) used to identify a GSM subscriber. The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone or broadband telephony device.

Unlock
The process of Unlocking allows your iPhone to use any GSM sim card. Currently Apple has limited the use of the iPhone to a select few wireless carriers. The iPhone must be unlocked before you can use any carrier of your choice.
